Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the government for every citizen of India by UIDAI. It is a biometric document that records your private information in a government database. Aadhaar acts as a single identity document and does not replace PAN, passport, driving license or any other identity document. It is issued to residents of India on the basis of their demographic and biometric data.
Under the Aadhaar Act, 2016, every citizen can apply for an Aadhaar number. A resident is a person who has been living in the country for 182 days or above, instantly before the date of application for nomination. If you meet this condition and wish to enroll for Aadhaar, you will be required to submit some documents that support your claims. The documents to be submitted at the UIDAI authorized centers are not too much and the entire process is quite easy. The type of documents you have to provide can be divided into four sections- Proof of Identity, Proof of Address, Proof of Date of Birth and Proof of Relationship.
Proof of Identity – Documents Required for New Aadhar Card
Documents supporting proof of identity validate that you are who you claim to be. All documents use as identity proof will at least have your name and photo. When you visit any Aadhaar enrollment center for Aadhaar registration, take any of the following documents with you as proof of identity:
- Passport
- Ration card
- NREGS job card
- Government photo ID cards
- PAN card
- Photobank ATM card
- ECHS/CGHS photo card
- Driving license
- Voter ID
- Arms license
- Photo ID is issued by a legitimized educational institution
- Photo credit card
- Certificate of identity with photo issued by Tehsildar or gazetted officer or on a letterhead
- Kissan photo passbook
- Pensioner photo card
- Freedom fighter photo card
- Disability ID card or handicapped medical certificate
- Address card having name and photo issued by the Department of Posts
Proof of Address – Documents necessary for Aadhaar Registration
Documents that support proof of address help confirm that your address is where you claim to live. All documents used to serve as address proof will at least have your name and address. Be sure to mention the correct address in your application form as your Aadhaar card will be sent to the address you indicated. When you visit the Aadhaar Registration Center for Aadhaar registration, you can present any of the following documents as proof of address:
- Bank statement
- Passbook
- Ration card
- Passport
- A signed letter that has picture from the bank on a letterhead
- Insurance document
- Signed letter with photo and issued by a registered firm on a letterhead
- Arms license
- Post office statement or passbook
- Voter ID
- Government picture ID cards or PSU issued service photo identity card
- Signed letter with a picture and issued by a recognized educational institution on a letterhead
- Driving license
- Water bill (mustn’t be old than 3 months)
- Electricity bill (shouldn’t be old than 3 months)
- Property tax receipt (shouldn’t be old than a year)
- Address card that has a photo and is issued by the Department of Posts
- Gas connection bill (mustn’t be old than 3 months)
- Passport of parents (for minors)
- Disability ID card
- Vehicle registration certificate
- Registered lease/sale/rent agreement
- Caste and domicile certificate with photo
- Telephone bill
- Credit card statement (mustn’t be older than 3 months)
- NREGS job card
- Pensioner card
- Kissan passbook
- Freedom fighter card
- Income tax assessment order
- ECHS/CGHS card
- For village areas – certificate of address issued by rural panchayat head or an equivalent authority
- Marriage certificate having an address and issued by the government
- State or central government issued allotment letter of accommodation (mustn’t be older than 3 years)
List of Date of Birth Proofs – Documents essential for Aadhaar
The official documents of your date of birth confirm that the date of birth you mentioned is right. When you go to any Aadhaar enrollment center for Aadhaar registration, you can submit any of the following documents as proof of date of birth:
- Passport
- SSC certificate
- Birth certificate
- PAN card
- Certificate of date of birth and issued by a group of a gazetted officer on a letterhead
- State/central pension payment order
- Mark sheet issued by government university or board
Proofs of Relationship Documents Required for Aadhaar Enrollment
When you go to any Aadhaar enrollment center for Aadhaar registration, you can submit any of the following documents as proof of date of birth. When you visit any Aadhaar enrollment center for Aadhaar registration, you can submit any of the following documents as proof of relationship:
- PDS card
- Job card of MNREGA
- Passport
- CGHS/State Government/ECHS/ESIC medical card
- Birth certificate issued by Registrar of Birth or local government or municipal corporation
- Canteen card of the army
- Pension card
- Family entitlement document that is issued by central/state government
- Government-issued marriage certificate
Documents Required for Changing Address In Aadhaar Card
If you already have an Aadhaar card and want to change the place of residence or make any corrections to it, you can submit one of the following documents:
- Ration card
- Voter ID
- Driving license
- Passport
- Bank statement/passbook
- Post office account statement/passbook
- Government photo ID cards
- Electricity bill (shouldn’t be old than 3 months)
- Water bill (shouldn’t be old than 3 months)
- Telephone landline bill (mustn’t be old than 3 months)
- In case of village areas – certificate of address issued by the head of the rural panchayat
- Income tax assessment order
- Vehicle registration certificate
